Dear Representative [or Senator] [insert last name]:

I am writing to you today as a constituent in your district who is one of many struggling parents with court ordered child support arrears due to them. According to The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s preliminary report for the Fiscal Year 2007 (most recent report available), nationwide, the amount of child support in arrears is $107,248,465,839.

Our government is currently bailing out companies with the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. The purpose of this act is to restore liquidity and stability to the U.S. financial system and to ensure the economic well-being of Americans. These major corporations are mainly in need of a bailout due to their own greed. What about the economic well-being of our nation’s children and their parents? Many of whom are in economic distress as a result of child support arrears.

I call to you to consider a bailout plan for our nation’s children. This plan could be in the form of an economic stimulus check. Unlike past economic stimulus checks the amount paid would be a loan. This loan would be the responsibility of the parent who owes the arrears to pay back to the government.

I appeal to you to reflect on this suggestion. Parents and children in this situation need your help. I am enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your reply.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this matter, which holds great importance to America’s children.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

I think this is a great idea. I was just taking to someone the other dayand I said you'll be tracted down more effiently if you get a traffic ticket but if you produce a child and don't pay child support it's a wait ad see attitude in the system. And why is it that way?? Why hasn't the generation before us tried to change this so this didn't happen? We support foreign wars, there numerous charties that are funded for every disease you can imagine, and so on....and here we are fighting for something we should not have to fight for in the first place. People have accpected this cat and mouse game as a way of dealing with child support...But I'm a firm believer that your actions should have consequences.

Tarah,

I say the same thing all the time. If I had a ticket that I didn't pay they would be knocking at my door, but my daughter's father is in major arrears and doesn't even have a writ issued on him.
You are fighting tooth and nail to get CSE to do what they are supposed to do and it seems like it is unimportant to them.
I hope you two had a great Christmas and have a wonderful New Year :)

I think CSE should just be shut down. What's the point in having people answer the phone and talk some crap..where nothing is done....then answer another call. My dad never paid child support and my mom never filled...so I take it super personal.....And the guy never gets a consequnce if nothing is served..he just learns to move on with life and it just becomes something of the past. Meanwhile....the guy could then go on and do the same stupid to someone else......if the consequences were strict in the first place people wouldn't feel so lack about child support in the first place.

And I think my son will be my only child. I see too many women married with several kids..then get a divorce with several kids. I have 1 with some family support ..And I feel burnout at times....I couldn't imagine do the samething with 2 or more children...my head would spin.

I hope you had a wonderful X-Mas also. Let me know if you're still interested in meeting next month. And it's funny I just found out I have relatives ....a 1st cousin I didn't know about that lives in Tampa. She has 3 kids. Maybe I could visit her and meet up with you and Leigh sometime this year....Anyway...let me know...And don't forget to treat yourself right...then if will also help your daughter in return. ~.~

I look forward to meeting up. That would be great for you to meet us and your cousin :) It is funny how things work.
Yes I couldn't imagine going through this with another child. It must be hell tenfold.
One day you may change your mind :) when you get married.

Tammy,
I love it! Really this seems like the right way to go about things. Especially if the state stands behind saying the CSE is working. I have found in my experience that writing your state legislatures is the way to go. I now have a personal child support specialist who picks up my calls or calls me back when I leave a message. Apparently each district has a person that takes care of CSE cases that are brought to the attention of state representatives and senators. Since I have written the email and copied several state reps and senators, I have gotten 3 checks. Which I think is amazing. I mean just to not have to wait for 20 to 30 minutes in the automated system to talk to someone is a gift.
FYI- There is going to be a seminar on How advocates can talk to their legistature and get their caused noticed at Childrens's week. I really think this is going to be a great learning experience for me. I hope I have time to attend it. I am now taking more of a leadership role on conducting tours of the capitol that day. This should be exciting. Tammy maybe we can coordinate a childrens week event here in Tampa next year:). Unfortunately since I have taken on more responsibilty in this project and my dad is visitng that weekend in Feb. I am sure I will not be able to make it in Feb. I will give the tickets to Tammy if you two want to meet up. I really think my free time is going to be consumed by my son basketball season(I am the coach), and children's week. I hope you both understand. I really really want to get together! I guess it will have to wait until summer unless you end up deciding to go to childrens week. :)

I read your reply. I agree the Children's Plan sounds brilliant. Where is Children's week? Sorry you can't make it to Orlando..bummer. We can still all get to together sometime..not sure if you read what I wrote in this blog ealier but I have a cousin who lives in the Tampa area(just found out recently) so maybe we could all meet up then. It would serve a lot of purposes. And I'm impresed how you have a direct number to a personal child support specialist. How do I go about doing that? Hope all is well. Sounds like everything is coming together. =)

I called my state representative about my situation. I also called the state representative on the Children and family commitee. I have been sent out several emails. I finally sent an email once my child support was 6 months in current arrearage. I copied the govenor and his office request that they take care of it. Unfortunately in these situations it is the ones who cry the loudest that help. Start with calling your local state representatives office and tell them what is happening and what you need help with.

Thanks, I will take your advise. As it stands my son will be 3 in March and I've yet an even step into court. There was an order to take DNA testing in November and he had 20 days to confirm. I called a few weeks ago to the clerk of courts, CSE, and the district attorney but no one has any information at that time. There is information however on the Broward Court website concerning this case but no date. In my case this guy's parents don't want their son to take responsibility..ie paying child support and at the same time would not sign rights away. So it's a when we're ready to be there attitude. It's no surprise this guy acts the way he does because he has parents that reenforce his deadbeat attititude. It's completely unfair and a very childish way to deal with this. This a a joke the that family and I know it. And to me it's an even bigger joke because he's on probation till MAy30th, 2009. Has paid probation and avoid probation then ending up in jail. And I can't understand why it wasn't ordered in the jail to take the DNA. Why couldn't the 2 be linked? This guy had no prior record until after his son was born...so in the way I do believe the DUI he got was a result of him not taking responsibility of his son. I don't hate this guy and just have no patience when it comes to not taking responsibility for actions and being a real man.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not knocking anyone who's posted here... but I do find myself a bit disheartened.... I haven't joined too many online parenting groups (single parents, etc)... and the ones I have joined are the same old song and dance... it's always about the man... trash the man... rip men up... it's men who cause hurt in single parent households... Well... in many cases... yes... but it's fast becoming less of a gender issue (as women are turning out to be less "stellar" as they were)...
I don't get child support for my daughter... though I have full custody... In fact... because I am a man... and make as much money as I do... I'm only entitled to 200 bucks a months (pretty damn cheap amount for raising a child)... so... it's really not that big of a deal that she doesn't pay it... it's just the idea of the matter...
Anyhow... I've found from this group... as well as most of the others that it's less about actually dealing with the issues or open communication... and more about a group of women who are disgruntled and beatin' up on the man...
For this reason... I'm not going to be active on this site either...
Yall have a good'n
